Shrove Tuesday Treats

Pancake Day. Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday. Whatever you call it, today is the day for two things: a good confession and good food! I’ve been a-shriving, and now it’s time to feast! We used up every egg, drop of milk, bit of meat, and crumb of chocolate in our house this past week in preparation for our Lenten fast. I know, it’s a tough job, but somehow we saw it through.

Here’s what’s on our menu for the day:

Breakfast: semlör (Swedish Fat Tuesday Buns) in steamed milk, scrambled eggs

Lunch: buttermilk pancakes drenched in butter and heated syrup with tall glasses of ice cold milk

Dinner: steaks with shallot-red wine reduction, oven-baked truffled French fries, creamed spinach

Dessert: the last of the semlör - this time rather than serving them in bowls of warm milk, I’ll pair them with creamy mugs of hot cocoa

  1. Ugh, I want to celebrate today! But I agreed to work from 4pm till 12am tonight. Which means I will probably be eating some fast food hamburger and my husband will have PB&J for dinner. So we're basically starting lent a day earlier here.

  3. I had Dutch pancakes... big flat ones with bacon! For dinner, as we Dutch do :). The dough for the hot cross buns is rising... we'll eat them tomorrow as my American roommate told me it's a tradition eating them on Ash Wednesday.

  4. Oker- where in the US is your friend from? We get the tradition of hot cross buns via the UK, but I have always known them to be a Good Friday tradition. I always wondered, myself, why sweet buns were traditional fare for a fast day. haha. In our family, we have them on Easter Sunday.

  5. We're also having steak tonight, with german potato salad, green beans, salad, and apple pie. Ooh, and biscuits!! I'm not sure what kind of a reduction/sauce to make for the steaks though...

  7. We're having pasta, turkey sausage and leftover chicken. I still haven't decided what to give up for Lent! Is it true that you can indulge on Sunday in whatever you are giving up or did I just make that up in my mind?

  9. Maryann - Yes, you can break fast on Sundays! Actually, if you count to days of Lent, you'll find that it is actually 46 days from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. This is because Sundays are not meant to count as a part of the 40-day penitential season! Good luck deciding what to sacrifice!

  13. Because I way-underestimated how long it would take to defrost sausage, we ended up going out to eat burgers and ice cream for Fat Tuesday.

    I wonder how my DH is going to do not eating brkst or lunch. He is almost 6'2" and has a fast metabolism. I told him I don't think he has to fast this year, since he's still in RCIA and not officially Catholic yet, but he wants to participate. I'm impressed but I hope he doesn't get light-headed at his desk.

    I've decided to give up desserts and non-Christian blogs for lent. I have to find a way to "lent-ify" my computer, so that I don't even see the non-Christian blogs on my blogger list, otherwise it will be too tempting.
